Superpitcher « Rabbits In A Hurry » : déjà single de l’année

Trouvé par hasard hier en magasin, j’ai cru défaillir au moment de réaliser que j’avais bien enfin en main le 12″ de mon single de l’année fantasmé depuis des mois.
De toutes façons, ça fait des années que ça dure, je suis le pantin du marionnettiste Aksel Schaufler, il fait à peu près ce qu’il veut de moi aussi bien en home listening qu’en club ou en interview. Je lui dis instinctivement d’accord à peu près à tout.

Et Rabbits In A Hurry ne déroge pas à la règle, Superpitcher a beau mettre des sirènes au beau milieu de sa pop moderne racée : d’accord. Sans compter la ligne de basse de pervers (son obsession pour Roxy Music, ça), la voix désabusée, et les montagnes russes, c’est bon on a dit D’ACCORD déjà.

Fascinant la cohérence et l’harmonie entre Aksel Schaufler, son physique, ses oeuvres et ses sets : grace, élégance et sexe tropical.

Found randomly yesterday in store, I almost fainted when I realized I finally had in my hands the 12” of my likely single of the year, fantasized for months.
Anyway, it’s been going on for years, I’m the toy of the puppeteer Aksel Schaufler, he almost does whatever he wants from me, either in home listening as well as in club or in interview. I instinctively agree with him on almost everything.

And Rabbits In A Hurry doesn’t derogate from this rule, even though Superpitcher adds sirens in the middle of his racy modern pop : I agree. And what about the perverted bass line (which comes clearly from its obsession for Roxy Music), the disenchanted voice and the roller coaster, fair enough, AGREED.

Fascinating, the consistency and the harmony between Aksel Schaufler, his physical appearance, his work, his sets : grace, elegance and tropical sex.

Siskid & Rebolledo : remix de l’année ?

This may be one of the remixes of the year : Romero’s zombies vs Rebolledo’s hypnotic groove vs Siskid’s dark soul. F****** huuuuuuuuge.

Toujours intimidant de prendre la plume pour défendre un ami et encore plus s’il se révèle l’un des musiciens électroniques français les plus passionnants de sa génération. Sous son épaisse carapace de sécheresse noire se cache en fait un artiste accompli et généreux. A peu de choses près, l’exact opposé de la sombre image incrustée dans l’inconscient collectif du public et de ses pairs depuis des années.

Aujourd’hui, avec la sortie de son épatant maxi Gun Stubs, Siskid démontre qu’il est arrivé à maturité artistique avec une maîtrise totale de tous ses paradoxes : compositions habitées aux influences domptées, groove robotique chaleureux, production sombre lumineuse.
Un peu comme si succès et échecs de son parcours prenaient enfin sens sous ses claviers, libérés d’un quelconque poids fictif ou non.

Si je m’écoutais (et n’avais pas envie qu’ils vendent des milliers de teléchargements), j’aurais mis ici tous ses morceaux du maxi (sauf le remix sans intérêt des Glimmers). Le « problème », impossible de ne pas mettre en avant le probable remix de l’année 2010. La recomposition magique de Rebolledo me donne la chair de poule à chaque écoute. Et vu que je peux le passer en boucle pendant des heures, je danse seul chez moi en clappant des mains, le poil hérissé et le corps frissonnant. Et lorsqu’il l’a joué durant la release party au Point Ephémère, effet exponentiel : je dansais seul dans une bulle avec Rebolledo, en totale communion. Une béatitude absolue face aux vagues successives d’orgues et à l’élégance de ce groove racé si audacieux. Image persistante : si les zombies de Romero se décidaient à monter un groupe, ce remix de Rebolledo serait leur hit single.

Always intimidating to put pen on paper to defend a friend, and even more when he turns out to be one of the most fascinating French electronic artist of its generation. Under his thick shell of black dryness an accomplished and warm hearted artist is in fact hiding. Almost the exact opposite of the dark image which takes roots in the collective subconscious of the audience and its peers for years.

Today, with the release of his splendid 12″ Gun Stubs, Siskid demonstrates he reached an artistic maturity with a complete control of all its paradoxes : inhabited compositions with mastered influences, robotic warm groove, enlighten black production.
A little bit as if success and failures of his career where finally meaningful under his keyboards, freed from some fictive -or not- weight.

If I was listening to myself (and didn’t want him to sell tons of downloads), I would have put here all the songs of the 12’ (unless the uninteresting remix by The Glimmers). The “problem” here, it’s impossible for me not to push forward likely one the remix of the year 2010. The magical rewriting ofRebolledo is giving me goose bumps each time I listen to it !  Since I can spend hours playing it over and over, I dance alone at home, clapping my hands, bristling and shivering. And when he played it during the release party at the Point Ephemere, exponential effect : I was dancing alone in my own bubble with Rebolledo, in complete connection. An absolute beatitude facing the successive waves of organs and the so audacious elegant and distinguished groove. Persisting image : if Romero’s zombies were deciding to built up a band, this Rebolledo’ single would be their number one hit.

Hey, Meant boys, a such solid release deserves a vinyl ! Shall we start a petition ?

Tristesse Contemporaine, pleasure from the bass

Indie ? Pop ? Krautrock ? Shoegazer ? Who cares ?

51 Ways To Leave Your Lover from the new ace trio Tristesse Contemporaine has all in it : strong tune, androgyn deep voice, heavenly synths and a huge f****** bass line.

The song will be released early may on Danton Eeprom‘s label Fondation Records and it’s definitely going to be one of the highlight of 2010.

Rob, french pop genius

If this song sounds like an unpublished Phoenix one, it makes sense or almost does. Released as a B side of an Air single issued from the original soundtrack of Virgin Suicides, this re-orchestration by Rob smells like the sweet Californian sunshine from the 70’s. Secret weapon of my indie pop parties, Highschool Prom has, in a manner of speaking, never left my DJ bag since its release in 2000. Never. At the voice, the infamous enigmatic Gordon Track is no other than Thomas Mars from… Phoenix.

Perfect pop song, isn’t it ?

Si cette chanson sonne comme un inédit de Phoenix, c’est normal ou presque. Sortie en face b du single de Air tiré de la bande originale de Virgin Suicides, cette ré-orchestration signée Rob sent bon le doux soleil californien des seventies. Munition secrète de  mes soirées indie pop, Highschool Prom n’a pour ainsi dire jamais quitté mon dj bag depuis sa sortie en 2000. (4Real) Shoegazing : 14 Iced Bears

Not really labeled as Shoegazer at the time, 14 Iced Bears, nearly 20 years after, fits ultimately the suit perfectly : ethereal melodies, lustful rhythms, chaotic guitars and hazy voices.

The good surprise of my digging for the NEW IS THE NEW OLD, tonight at Le Motel. And don’t forget to wear one of your old school t-shirt. Oh boy, so exciting!

Ps : I keep the “premiere“ for tonight, but if you behave, i’ll post their brilliant fucked up cover of Summer Nights. Yep, yep, Grease!

Pas vraiment considéré comme Shoegazer à l’époque, 14 Iced Bears enfile finalement parfaitement le costume près de 20 ans après : mélodies éthérées, rythmique lascive, guitares bordéliques et voix vaporeuses.

La bonne surprise de ma fouille archéologique pour la NEW IS THE NEW OLD au Motel ce soir. Et n’oubliez pas de venir avec vos tee-shirts de groupes d’époques ! Oh boy, so exciting !

Ps : je garde la primeur pour ce soir, mais si vous êtes sages je posterais leur reprise génial n’importequoi/n’importecomment de Summer Nights. Ouais ouais Grease !

Aswefall, pop glacée

Ok, in term of cold pop, we agree, no one will ever be as perfect as The Cure’s Seventeen Seconds, in which Robert Smith’s compositions and mostly Mike Hedges’ sound experiments stay unbelievably modern after over 30 winters. Today, 5 long years after a moving first album (Bleed) which has been for a long time my bedside album, the new one is already a worthy successor of the Cure from the 80’s.

I’m quite obsessional and demanding regarding this precise type of cold pop or freezing pop, according to the mood, not to be afraid of this kind of comparison. The references are really there (Factory, The Wake, The Cure…), proudly shown, absolutely undeniable, but without ever falling in the shortcomings of soul-less tribute neither in the primary insurmountable attachment to the past.

Inspired, courageous and modern, Fun Is Dead is brilliantly fooling music kinds (pop, ambient, cold wave, electro, minimal, electronica, shoegazing, etc) and is going to be one of the beautiful musical surprises of the upcoming spring.

Awaiting the official release (Module distribution) beginning of March, Fun Is Dead can be listened at by the end of the post, is already available as a preview at Colette and will be thrown with a party at the Social Club on Tuesday March 4 if everything is going fine. More details to come…

Ok, en matière de cold pop, on est d’accord, personne ne pourra jamais égaler la perfection du Seventeen Seconds de The Cure, dont les compositions de Robert Smith et surtout les expérimentations sonores de Mike Hedges demeurent incroyablement modernes près de 30 hivers plus tard. Aujourd’hui, cinq longues années après un touchant premier album (Bleed) qui fut longtemps mon disque de chevet, le nouveau s’affirme comme un digne successeur du Cure de 80.

Je suis assez obsessionnel et exigeant sur ce genre particulier de cold pop ou pop glacée, selon l’humeur, pour ne pas avoir peur d’oser ce type de comparaison. Les références sont là certes (Factory, The Wake, The Cure…), fièrement affichées, totalement indéniables, mais elles ne basculent jamais dans les travers d’un hommage sans âme ni un passéisme primaire.

Inspiré, courageux et moderne, Fun Is Dead se joue des genres avec brio (pop, ambient, cold wave, electro, minimal, electronica, shoegazing, etc) et s’annonce comme une des plus belles surprises musicales du printemps.

En attendant sa sortie officielle début mars (distribué par Module), Fun Is Dead s’écoute en extrait en fin de post, se commande d’ores et déjà en avant première chez Colette et se fêtera si tout se passe bien en soirée au Social Club le jeudi 4 mars. Plus de détails à suivre prochainement.
